Addition for Kids

Addition is combining two or more numbers together to find a new total. A variety of teaching tools can help your kids to understand addition concepts.

Use math manipulatives and tools to help children solve problems in hands-on ways. Any easily handled object may be used such as blocks, beans or fruits. Give the child two small groups of items and have them count the numbers of items in each groups and the total numbers of items. Practice using fingers to solve basic addition.

Teach children how to draw pictures to solve equations. They can draw pictures to represent what they hear in the story or simple shapes to draw things quickly.
